Get to Know Us

Voices United for Change was born from a family’s struggle for justice. Over two decades ago, Dr. Bingzhang Wang, one of China’s earliest pro-democracy advocates, was kidnapped and unjustly imprisoned. His granddaughter, Ella Wang, never met him outside prison walls. But his courage inspired her to transform grief into activism.

Founded by Ella, Voices United for Change carries forward her grandfather’s legacy by educating communities, inspiring youth, and advocating for the release of political prisoners worldwide.

About Wang Bingzhang

Born December 30, 1947, Wang Bingzhang is a political activist who publicly opposed China’s one party rule. He was forcibly removed from the country and went to live in Montreal, Canada, in the 1980s. But in June of 2002, he traveled to meet with activists in Vietnam, where he was kidnapped. Six months later, in December 2002, he was announced to be arrested on charges of espionage and terrorism. He went on a hunger strike after being punished for misbehaving, which led to more intense punishment, like solitary confinement. Many international organizations, including Amnesty International and the United Nations, oppose China’s decision to imprison him.

In addition to being a political activist, he is also a father and grandpa. Not only that, but he was a respected doctor who served for eight years before becoming the first citizen of the People’s Republic of China to get a doctorate degree in North America. He chose to fight for human rights. Being imprisoned for decades, he’s never seen his grandkids in person. We’re still fighting for his freedom today.

Founder’s Letter

Freedom has never been an abstract word in my life—it has been a wound, a calling, and ultimately, a responsibility.

More than twenty years ago, my grandfather, Dr. Bingzhang Wang, one of China’s earliest voices for democracy, was abducted while abroad and unjustly sentenced to life in prison. For my family, this was not simply a headline in history—it was the beginning of an absence that has shaped every chapter of our lives. I grew up never knowing him outside of prison walls. My childhood was filled without his presence, but with stories of his courage, letters smuggled through restrictions, and the quiet resilience of a family learning to live with both pride and loss.

From an early age, I understood that silence was dangerous. It was not safety—it was complicity. My grandfather’s story taught me that when voices are stifled, injustice thrives. And so I made a choice: I would not let his sacrifice, or the sacrifices of countless others, fade into silence.

I founded Voices United for Change because I believe that personal grief can become collective strength. Our mission is rooted in two truths: that freedom of expression is a universal right, and that no family should suffer in isolation when a loved one is punished for speaking the truth. Through advocacy, we amplify the stories of political prisoners. Through art, we transform suffering into testimony. Through youth leadership, we equip a new generation—including my own peers—to stand where others have been silenced.

This movement is not about me, or even only about my grandfather. It is about every prisoner whose courage costs them their freedom, every family forced to carry invisible burdens, and every young person searching for the strength to speak up in a world that teaches them to stay quiet.

When you support Voices United for Change, you are joining a community that insists on remembering. You are helping to ensure that silence does not win—that courage is not forgotten, and that freedom remains a promise worth fighting for.

My grandfather once risked everything for the dream of a freer world. Today, as a student, an artist, and an advocate, I carry that dream forward. I cannot do it alone. I invite you to walk with us—to lend your voice, your conviction, and your hope to this cause. Together, we can turn silence into action, grief into hope, and dreams into freedom.

With determination,
Ella Wang
